If you're planning to train your dog, the following provides an overview of the most popular dog training supplies, where you're able to find them, and which ones you should choose for your dog.

One of the first things that you need to determine when selecting dog training supplies is the type of animal you are going to train. For example, many of the sporting dogs, such as hunting and bird dogs, require specialty equipment, while other training may require the most basic equipment.

Leash

For basic obedience training, all that is generally necessary is a collar and a leash (or lead). Leash and lead are often used interchangeably, the difference being that a leash must be attached to a collar whereas a lead can be looped over the dog’s neck without need for a collar. For all practical purposes they are the same, so we will use the term leash here.

A leash allows you to control your dog while walking, and shows the dog that you are in control.

Dog leashes are typically made of leather, rope, nylon, or other materials, and come in variety of designs and colors. Lengths of leashes vary from about a foot (very short) to 25 feet or more, depending on the training purpose.

Length does matter when it comes to dog training leashes.   There are different exercises that require the use of different leash sizes, depending on how close or far you want your dog to be.

Long leashes are usually used for distance training; short leashes are used for control.

Collar

The type of collar that you choose is also going to depend upon the type of training that is being done. Most people are going to want to have a standard choke collar, but you can also get those that are made out of cloth or that are made out of a chain like material.

Make sure that you never keep these on your dog whenever they are out of sight, as it can become a serious choking hazard. Most people do not choose one of these when looking for hunting dog training supplies but rather, will choose an all weather collar that will still allow them to keep a leash on them when necessary.

Muzzle

A muzzle is a device that is placed over the mouth of an aggressive dog to keep it from barking or biting. The muzzle can be adjusted to vary how much a dog can open his mouth   Muzzles vary in shape, and made with leather, plastic, wire, or plastic materials.

Bait Pouch

A bait pouch is used to hold dog treats, which you give to reward the dog during training. The pouch is attached to the trainer’s waist to allow easy access to the treats to quickly reward the dog for good performance.

Halter

A halter is similar to a collar, and is used to guide your dog for easier control. The halter goes over the muzzle and is attached at the back of the dog's head. This allows the trainer simply pull the head of the dog to signal directions.

When you are ready to get your dog training supplies, two of the most important factors to keep in mind are quality and reliability of the items.  Don't go cheap, and try to save a little money, only to find the equipment wears out quickly or doesn't work very well.   It's best to pay a little more for better quality equipment that will durably last, and will help you safely train your dog.

Crate

One other thing that you may want to consider is getting the crate for your dog. This is important, not only for dogs that are going to be out in the field but also for those that live in the home. Dogs appreciate having their own space, and whenever you choose a crate that is the right size, you are giving them the space that they need.

A crate provides a great way for you to take care of much of the training that needs to be done, as well as to keep your dog from getting into mischief whenever you're not around. A crate is one piece of training equipment that should not be overlooked.
